This project is the vision of HRH The Prince of Wales, who wanted to create an outstanding building which will not only act as a focus and inspiration for the personal development of young people, but which has been designed and built by young people.
Birmingham City Council is working with South Birmingham College, Connexions and the Construction Employment Alliance to support the trainees through a training programme and into employment.
Trainees started working on the site in January 2006, working for trade specific sub-contractors, overseen by, the main contractors, Thomas Vale Construction. Each trainee is on site for 4 weeks, giving them the chance to pick up some of the life skills needed to work in construction. So far the trainees have shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the project.
After their initial work individual placements, the trainees will work together to fit out the first and second floors starting in April 2006. This 3 month piece of work is being co-ordinated by tutors from South Birmingham College and will generate a significant cost saving for the project.
Once the building is complete, it will include:
- A recording studio
- Facilities for performances
- A cybercafé
- A crèche
- Access to a range of support services
Vocational training with City College, one of the main providers, will be given when the building is up and running.
